Proactive Listening

Workshop Duration: 4 hours

Intense competition and rapid change have dramatically expanded the need for information. This need for more, better, faster information cannot be met by technology alone--interpersonal communication also must improve.

To work together effectively, people need to communicate clearly about shared tasks, customer needs, activities of other groups in the organization, external influences, and their own thoughts and feelings.

Proactive Listening helps meet this need. It presents a process for listening proactively that helps people communicate more effectively and build the positive relationships they need to achieve personal and organizational goals.

Participants learn verbal and nonverbal tips for moving from a reactive to a proactive approach to listening. They observe positive and negative examples of listening behavior and have the opportunity to practice new skills.

Learning Objectives:
  • List typical barriers to effective listening
  • List specific techniques to deal with communication styles they find challenging
  • Use the Key Actions to listen proactively
  • Identify steps they can take to reinforce proactive listening

Handling Emotions under Pressure

Workshop Duration: 4 hours

Emotions are bound to erupt in today's high-pressure work environment. The challenges are to (1) prevent them from building to the point where they inhibit rational and productive interactions and (2) transform them from negative outbursts into positive problem-solving opportunities.

An overly emotional response is often a cue that a problem is affecting an employee's ability to work effectively. When others are able to deal with the emotion and move the discussion forward, a solution is more likely to occur.

This workshop gives participants a process for handling the emotions in daily work situations. Participants learn to remain calm and objective, to recover quickly and help others do the same, and to take charge in difficult circumstances to keep the discussion moving forward.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explain why emotions are normal and can even be helpful in work situations
  • Identify situations where emotional behavior is inhibiting productive discussion
  • Explain why the ability to maintain composure at work, or to regain it quickly, is an important skill
  • Identify ways to manage their own reactions to the emotional behavior of others
  • Use appropriate techniques to diffuse emotional behavior when it hinders progress in a work situation

Influencing for Win-Win Outcomes

Workshop Duration: 4 hours

Successful organizations thrive on new ideas, because new ideas can help everyone discover better ways to work. An organization that can put people’s good ideas to use has a powerful competitive edge: continuous improvement.

But in today’s cross-functional workplace, ideas often need support from a wide range of people in order to be successfully implemented. Unless people have the confidence and skills to win support for their ideas by influencing others, many good ideas will be lost.

In this workshop, participants learn to analyze, develop and present their ideas in a way that helps them win the necessary support.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explain why influencing for win-win outcomes is an important skill in today’s results-oriented organizations
  • Recognize situations where it is appropriate to use influencing skills
  • Identify a variety of factors that motivate people
  • Use the Key Actions to influence people in all areas and at all levels of the organization

Moving From Conflict to Collaboration

Workshop Duration: 4 hours

Changes in the workplace are putting new emphasis on the importance of effective collaboration. Organizations are expecting employees at all levels to work together, often across functions, to solve problems and make decisions that were once the exclusive responsibility of management.

While collaboration contributes to improved performance, it also can reveal new opportunities for conflict. Consequently, employees at every level need to be able to deal with conflict.

This workshop gives participants the skills to turn conflict into opportunities to achieve positive, productive results. Participants identify their typical approaches to conflict; explore the pitfalls common to dealing with conflict in today's organizations; and, using a situation from their own work, practice the specific skills they use on the job.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explain influences that are contributing to conflict in today's organizations
  • Identify behavior patterns that undermine the ability to address conflict constructively
  • Describe productive methods of dealing with undermining behaviors
  • Distinguish between positions taken in a conflict and the underlying issues
  • Use the Key Actions to address conflict facing them on the job
